Mood Visualizer

Editorial

2023

There’s a psychological phenomenon that when people see, smell or hear something, they recall a piece of memory that is related to what they’re perceiving right now. I always have this feeling when I am browsing my photo album in my phone. A picture is not only a physical picture. It is also a carrier of a piece of memory filled with emotion. In this project, I try to use color to visualize my mood behind the photos that were taken when I first arrived in the US as an undergraduate student, using the posterization technique in the field of RISO printing. In this way, I explore a possibility to express one’s feeling through abstract and objective means like color, as well as how people’s physical perception affects what they see in a design.

When we want to posterize a picture in RISO printing, we need to adjust the value of threshold of a single picture for many times, in order to seperate areas of different brightness. Then, if we define the values to different emotions, we should be able to visualize the mood behind the pictures. I select eight photos that were shot when I arrived in the US in the first few days and posterized them individually.
